Jewel bell has worked quietly but firmly for over forty years to secure the civil rights of Bristol area residents. She began her career at king College in 1952 as a housekeeper, soon becoming the first black switchboard operator trained by United Telephone Company. When she took charge of the college’s public information center, her unique style of caring made her known to generations of students. She was elected the first black president of the Bristol PTA Council as well as being long active with the Girl Scout Council and lee street Baptist Church.
