Claire Doherty’s love for and commitment to Bristol began when she came to live here 36 years ago.
As a member of Newcomers & Friends, formerly Welcome Wagon, Claire became Bristol’s unofficial ambassador, greeting friends and making new ones. Yearly, donations from the group are collected for Claire to singlehandedly shop, wrap and distribute Christmas gifts for children in need of cheer.
For years, she was in charge of the crafts at the annual St. Anne’s bazaar, which raised thousands of dollars for the school. Claire hosted many, many workshops in her home and oversaw everyone’s work, maintaining very high standards.
Other commitments are the basket guild, quilt guild, the Sullivan County Home Extension Club, and the Bristol TN/VA Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America.
Her devotion to the community includes the YWCA. As a member of the Board of Directors, Claire is active on many committees, including Tribute to Women and Campaign of Promise. One of her pet projects is Eggstravaganza, working for months sewing bunnies and making other crafts to be sold. Her smile is as big as the children’s during this event.
Claire never says no to a new project or challenge.
