TechGYRLS Christmas Shopping Project: Adopt a TechGYRL

The impact of economic disparity on young girls in our region is multi-faceted; involving higher teen pregnancy rates and exposure to drugs and poor behavioral tendencies, any of which can easily sabotage academic achievements.

YWCA TechGYRLS afterschool program directly correlates with this need, serves up to 35 girls, ages 9 -14 and provides essentials like homework assistance & educational support, computer and technology training, and life skill development.  We collaborate with principals and guidance staff from the Bristol TN City Schools to select girls in our direct surrounding community. These girls may receive free/ reduced lunches, have poor grades, poor attendance, inappropriate behavior problems, or just in need of a helping hand to participate in this impactful program.

While the main goal of TechGYRLS is to increase educational opportunities through math, science and technology, we realize that there are many more pieces to the puzzle of developing well rounded, socially adjusted girls.

A special lesson that has always been a favorite of the girls is their Christmas Shopping Project. They make lists and budgets, and are given some time to do some online shopping just for themselves, with the guidance of a mentor (YW staff).  This project also serves as an end of the year reward for the girl’s hard work and committed participation. This year the girls will spend Dec 17th, watching a movie and playing games as well.

While it is a day full of excitement, many important lessons are taught through this project. Our objectives are:

  • To teach the girls how to budget and set priorities
  • To increase their self-worth
  • To assist them in buying appropriate winter clothes and shoes
  • To assist them in purchasing appropriate gender specific hygiene products that they otherwise might not have access to
  • To provide one-on-one attention from a caring adult mentor

Through donors like you, the YWCA is able to create a lesson in budgeting where the students think through wants vs needs and create a $50 budget.

It is our hope that you will help us give these girls an opportunity to experience the joy of the holiday season by sponsoring a TechGYRL for $50 this year.
